Simply put, electrolytes are electrically charged particles that dissolve in water and help our bodies stay hydrated. Common electrolytes are sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Some people think they need special drinks or supplements to get electrolytes, but actually electrolytes are naturally found in food. For example, sodium can be found in pickles, or soup. Dairy products like milk and yogurt are rich in calcium and potassium, and we get magnesium from vegetables and nuts. Because our bodies use a lot of electrolytes during exercise, focusing on replacing them with food is a good practice. In some cases, sports drinks are recommended if an athlete is sweating heavily for prolonged periods. But in general, getting a variety of foods and beverages every day, plus drinking water, will satisfy most people’s electrolyte and hydration needs.
