Hi, I’m Jackson Smith at Smith’s Cream Pitcher Jersey’s in Northern Utah, little town called Lewiston. One of the questions we frequently get asked is how do we keep our calves warm and comfortable during the wintertime, because it is a cold area that we live in.
We go to a lot of effort to do that. We keep fresh bedding in them all the time, we up the amount of milk they get in the wintertime so they have plenty of solids going into them to keep warm, and we also have jersey cattle, so they’re a little smaller and their bodies aren’t as big as some of the other dairy breeds. So, we have little coats on our calves. Each calf gets a coat when he comes to the hutches and we also have doors that goes on these calves, so every night these doors go on and they’re closed up nice and tight. We do everything we can in our power to make sure they’re warm and healthy and comfortable.
